Speech and painting contest marking Intl. Literacy Day held

QUETTA: A speech and painting competition was held under the auspices of Directorate of Literacy and Non-Formal Education, Social Welfare Department here at the Balochistan Boy Scouts Association’s headquarters the other day.
The competition marked the celebrations of International Literacy Day. The theme was: “Kitaboon ki dunya salamat hai†(Long live world of books).
A large number of the male and female students belonging to different government and private educational institutions took part in the competition. Also attended the event was by the teachers as well as people from various walks of the life and representatives of the civil society organizations working in the education sector.
The students demonstrated their skills in the competition and got an applause from the participants.
In the end, judges announced the name of position holders of the competition.
They would be given prizes on occasion of the grand ceremony to be held on the International Literacy Day to be observed on September 8 in Quetta.
It may be mentioned here that the theme of International Literacy Day 2015 is Literacy and Sustainable Societies.
Literacy is a key driver for sustainable development. Literacy skills are the prerequisite for the learning of a broader set of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, required for creating sustainable societies.
At the same time, progress in areas of sustainable development, such as health and agriculture, serves as an enabling factor in the promotion of literacy and literate environments.
